Saving Sri Lanka’s Gentle Giants: Our Commitment to Orphaned Baby Elephants

Who We Are & What We Do

At MediMax Ceylon by E-house, we believe in making a difference beyond just selling quality products. That’s why 5% of our profits go toward protecting orphaned baby elephants in Sri Lanka, ensuring they receive the essential meals, medical care, and protection they need to survive and thrive.

The Elephants of Sri Lanka: A National Treasure in Crisis

Sri Lanka is home to the Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus), a subspecies of the Asian elephant that plays a crucial role in the island’s ecosystem and cultural heritage. The country's lush forests, grasslands, and national parks serve as natural habitats for approximately 7,000 elephants. However, despite their cultural significance, these majestic animals face severe threats due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-elephant conflict (HEC).

The Human-Elephant Conflict: A Growing Concern

One of the biggest threats to elephants in Sri Lanka is human-elephant conflict (HEC), which arises when elephants venture into villages and farmland in search of food due to shrinking forests. This conflict has devastating consequences:

  • Over 300 elephants are killed annually due to retaliation or accidents.
  • More than 100 humans lose their lives each year in elephant encounters.
  • Baby elephants often become orphaned when their mothers are killed, leaving them vulnerable to starvation and disease.

Orphaned Baby Elephants: The Impact of the Crisis

When a mother elephant is killed, her calf is left helpless. Baby elephants rely on their mothers for milk, protection, and learning survival skills. Without intervention, many orphans face:

  • Starvation due to the inability to find proper food.
  • Increased vulnerability to predators and diseases.
  • Psychological trauma from losing their herd.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage: A Safe Haven

Established in 1975, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka is a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing and caring for orphaned elephants. The facility provides:

  • Food and medical care for elephants in need.
  • A natural environment for elephants to socialize and grow.
  • Conservation programs aimed at ensuring the long-term survival of Sri Lankan elephants.
